The fate of this theater is amazing and reflected in the name: during its not very long history for Venetian buildings (the opera was opened in 1792), it burned several times and rose from the ashes several times.
History of the Fenice Theatre
In 1774, the leading Venetian opera house of that time, San Benedetto, burned to the ground. The management company restored it, but lost a dispute with its owner in court and lost the theater again. As a result, the company decided to build its own new opera house. The name ‘La Fenice’ was given to the Teatro La Fenice, testifying to the renaissance. Paisiello’s opera The Agrigento Games opened the Teatro La Fenice in May 1792.
Fire destroyed the theater in December 1836, but architects Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna quickly restored it to its original form. A year later, the theater reopened its doors.
Fire destroyed the theater building again in January 1996. Electrician Enrico Carella committed the arson to avoid contractual fines for work delays. State-supported restorers rebuilt and inaugurated the theater in December 2003. La Fenice Theater in Venice was rebuilt in the style of the XIX century.
